Frequently asked questions
How big is it once it's unfolded?
How big is it once it's unfolded?
It fits adults up to 6'4". It opens to 210 x 90 cm (82.7 x 35.4 in), nearly 7 ft long and longer than a twin mattress, so you can get all the way inside wearing your clothes and pull it up to your shoulders.
How small does it pack?
How small does it pack?
In its drawstring sack it's about 2.6 x 3.9 inches, and the bag, sack and whistle together weigh 4.6 oz. That's about the size of a standard 12 oz soda can, so it fits in a glovebox, purse or the side pocket of a backpack.
How does it keep me warm without power?
How does it keep me warm without power?
The silver inner surface reflects the heat your body is already producing back toward you, and the closed bag shape keeps that warm air around you instead of letting it drift away. No batteries, fuel or outlet needed.
How do I get the most warmth out of it?
How do I get the most warmth out of it?
Wear your clothes and a hat, get all the way in and hold the opening closed around your shoulders with your face outside the bag. Put a jacket, seat cushion, cardboard or a sleeping pad underneath you if you're on a cold floor or ground. At home, slide it over your blanket or sleeping bag as an extra layer.
What's the whistle for?
What's the whistle for?
It's tied on the end of the drawstring, so it stays with the bag and is in your hand when you need to signal. Three short blasts is the widely recognized call for help.
Should I choose orange or green?
Should I choose orange or green?
Orange is for the car and the trail, when you want to be easy to find. Army green is for the home kit and the evacuation bag, when you'd rather stay low key. Same bag, same size, same warmth, same whistle.
Can I put it back in the sack after using it?
Can I put it back in the sack after using it?
It's a tight fit once it has been opened. Fold it in half across the width three times, roll it tightly from the closed end toward the opening to push the air out, then slide the roll in. If it won't go back in the sack, a rolled bag in any zip bag works just as well. Tip: keep one sealed in the car and open a second one at home for a practice run. It's made as an emergency backup; with care it can be used a few more times, and once it tears, replace it.
Why is it a little damp inside in the morning?
Why is it a little damp inside in the morning?
PE film holds in air and moisture, which is why it traps heat so quickly. Some dampness inside after a few hours is normal. Wearing your clothes inside and keeping your face out of the bag helps.
Is it safe for kids?
Is it safe for kids?
It's a thin plastic film, so keep it away from infants and small children and never let a child use it alone. Anyone using it should keep their face uncovered and never close the bag over their head. Keep it away from open flames, stoves and heaters.
